About the authors
Prof VS Ramamurthy is a Padma Bhushan awardee nuclear scientist known for his exemplary contribution in the field of nuclear physics. He is a former Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Science and Technology. He is currently an Emeritus Professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bengaluru.

Prof Shailesh Nayak is the Director at NIAS, Bengaluru and Distinguished Scientist at the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). He is the former Secretary to the Government of India, MoES. He has provided leadership for the programs related to science of climate change, weather services, polar science, geoscience, ocean science and modeling, ocean survey, resources, and technology.

Prof Dinesh Kumar Srivastava is Homi Bhabha Chair Professor at the NIAS, Bengaluru. He has held many distinguished positions in the past such as DAE Raja Ramanna Fellow; Director and Distinguished Scientist in Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata; Emeritus Professor, Homi Bhabha National Institute. 

About the manuscript
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the world to multiple risks and has affected social, economic, personal and professional aspects of our lives. Pandemic is a major public risk, for which everyone is vulnerable, responsible and at the helm of containing it. The pandemic has helped in creating risk awareness amongst the public. Simultaneously, lack of scientifically valid information, superstitions, and unverified claims have caused irreparable harm to the pandemic management. The manuscript authored by Prof VS Ramamurthy, Prof Dinesh K. Srivastava and Prof Shailesh Nayak look into various public risks including natural disasters, epidemics and pandemics, industrial disasters, and environmental disasters. It is an attempt to discuss public risks in depth. The authors have widely discussed risk perception, risk acceptance, risk communication, risk reduction, and risk management. It includes a specific focus on natural disasters, environmental disasters, industrial disasters, and epidemics and pandemics.
